Cardboard Shredder Shreds Chain Sprockets
Problem
A customer contacted us about a broken cardboard shredder used to recycle cardboard boxes into packaging void filling material. The machine had broken down, making a loud snapping sound.
Diagnosis
Inside the machine we found a broken chain drive and a snapped chain sprocket on the drive gearbox. It appeared from the scratches on the motor mounts that the motor and gearbox position shifted, misaligning the chain sprockets. This led to the chain climbing onto a tooth and breaking. The sprocket was split along the keyway and bent open.
Solution
A replacement chain and sprocket were sourced and fitted, with careful attention paid to realigning the chain path. We advised the customer to clean and grease the chain drive more regularly.
