Gloshine LED Display Dead Pixels

Problem

We were asked to repair individual LEDs and LED control issues in many panels of Gloshine outdoor LED display.

The display was used for several years in a harsh environment by the sea. The typical faults were dim or completely dead pixels with one or more colours affected.

Other issues arose from IC failures, leading to blocks of non-functioning pixels.

Diagnosis

The LEDs are surrounded by a waterproof sealant. We developed a process for removing the sealant, soldering replacement LEDs or reworking broken solder joints as required.

Due to corrosion of some solder joints, it was necessary to completely remove affected LEDs and clean the area to be able to make an effective and lasting repair.

In order to replace broken ICs we developed a process to completely remove the PCB, allowing IC replacements to be carried out on the rear side of the PCB.

Solution

After testing the repairs, the sealant is carefully rebuilt to provide continued protection from the weather. Additionally, we replaced broken LED driver ICs and related parts, bedding the PCB into the case with sealant.
