Aloka SSD-500 Ultrasound Scanner
Problem
An old portable ultrasound scanner had been acquired semi-working from a hospital waste equipment dump. It rapidly turned out to have some problems, the first time it was operated by the customer it began to smoke within a few minutes.
Diagnosis
It was immediately apparent when disassembled that the PSU was the source of the smoke. Capacitors had leaked and yellow electrolyte was visible in the case and on the PCB. After replacing many capacitors on the PSU PCB, the unit operates again but there is no visible ultrasound image shown.
Solution
It was possible to locate a test point on the large PCB which connected directly to the ultrasound head. This appeared to show a video-like signal which changed depending on the settings and what the detector head was in contact with. The video signal amplifier had an open circuit inductor, preventing the ultrasound image from reaching the display. With this replaced, the ultrasound scanner was fully functional.
