HDD Board Replacement: Memory IC Swap
Problem
In order to recover data from a damaged HDD we found it was necessary to replace the damaged PCB. The PCB includes a flash memory IC which has to be swapped onto the new PCB.
Diagnosis
We had to swap the flash memory IC from the damaged controller PCB onto an replacement PCB from a donor drive. We preheated both PCBs, removed the flash memory from the working PCB and set aside, then removed the flash IC from the original controller PCB and soldered it onto the replacement PCB.
Solution
The drive now works as expected with readable serial console and data recovery was then able to proceed unimpeded.
